International Workshop on Groundwater Systems in Europe
August 22 - 23, 2013 BGR Branch Office Berlin |
At the occasion of the completion of the International Hydrogeological Map of Europe (IHME), EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), in association with the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO, the European Topic Centre on Inland, Coastal and Marine Waters (ETC/ICM), the Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW), the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) and the International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC) organised an international workshop to discuss future perspectives of cooperation on hydrogeological issues in Europe. More than 60 groundwater experts from 19 European countries and several organisations as well as research institutes and universities participated in the workshop.
The workshop served as a platform to discuss:
- methods and approaches of characterization, classification and delineation of groundwater systems in Europe, including transboundary aquifer systems;
- significance of the hydrogeological background and natural groundwater flow systems in river basin management, modeling and decision support systems;
- challenges and opportunities for harmonized data handling in Europe for natural resources management and to sustain European land, water and soil policies;
- needs and requirements for underpinning policy approaches by appropriate data, tools and information to bridge the gap between science and policy stakeholders.
