Code of Practice for Geothermal Drilling

In May 2016, BGR has published the “African Union Code of Practice for Geothermal Drilling” for the Regional Geothermal Coordination Unit RGCU of the Energy Department of the African Union Commission. The Code has been launched during the 4th GRMF Donors Coordination Meeting on June 13th and 14th 2016 in Addis Ababa. The technical handbook advices on how to handle with deep geothermal drilling, focusing on safety, health and environmental issues during the exploration, development, exploitation and closing phase of geothermal drilling. It provides an overview on existing standards for the oil-, gas- and geothermal industry, followed by advices on the setup of drilling sites, drilling and installation of boreholes, equipment, borehole logging, measures during the exploitation and backfilling after closure, criteria for monitoring and documentation. The Code shall be a binding standard for developers applying with geothermal projects for funds at the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility GRMF and it shall serve as reference for financing and accountability for Investors, drilling companies, Assurances and Energy Supply Companies.
